Stocking density is a major consideration for anyone starting out in aquaponics. as so many people have asked about the best density for crop production, dr. nate storey has given us an introduction to stocking density and some great advice that applies to starting, maintaining and managing a healthy and productive aquaponics system.. Number of fish : 72 per 1,000l. suggested stocking density : 45 - 66 lb / 264 gal. number of fish : 72 per 264 gal. suggested stocking density : 21 - 30 kg / 1,000l. number of fish : 72 per 1,000l. suggested stocking density : 21 - 30 kg / 1,000l. number of fish : 72 per 1,000l.. Aquaponics (ap) is a semi-closed system of food production that combines aquaculture and hydroponics and represents a new agricultural system integrating producers and consumers. the aim of this study was to test the effect of stocking densities (apl, 2.5 kg m-3; aph, 4.6 kg m-3) on water quality, growth performance of the european carp (cyprinus carpio l.), and yield of leafy vegetables. Therefore, the study suggests that stocking density of 50 fish/tank for tilapia, i.e. 167 fish/m3, is suitable for production of both plant and fish in a recirculating aquaponic system.. You can manipulate the fish, tank volume, and stocking densities to achieve your target ratio. this ratio can also be determined in gallons per cubic foot (6 gallons (22 liters) of the fish tank to every cubic foot of grow bed). in a commercial setup, this ratio can be increased to 1:3 or 1:4 depending on the fish density and water flow rate. the abundant aeration and fast water cycling also enable the commercial systems to stock fish as high as 1 fish per 8-10 liters of water..
